Slip ratings help determine how safe a tile is underfoot. Here is a simple guide to understanding what they mean and where they are used.

When choosing tiles, it is important to consider how safe they are underfoot, especially in areas where water is present. Slip ratings are used to measure how much grip a tile has, helping you choose the right option for each space.

The higher the rating, the more slip resistant the tile will be.

R Rating (common international standard)

  • R9
Low slip resistance. Suitable for dry indoor areas such as living rooms and bedrooms.

  • R10
Moderate slip resistance. Commonly used in kitchens and light-use areas.

  • R11
Higher slip resistance. Suitable for bathrooms, laundries, and areas exposed to water.

  • R12
High slip resistance. Often used in outdoor areas and commercial spaces.

  • R13
Very high slip resistance. Used in heavy-duty commercial or industrial environments.

P Rating (used in New Zealand)

  • P0 to P2
Low slip resistance. Suitable for dry indoor spaces.

  • P3
Moderate slip resistance. Commonly used for residential bathrooms.

  • P4
High slip resistance. Suitable for outdoor areas, decks, and wet zones.

  • P5
Very high slip resistance. Typically used in commercial or high-risk environments.

Slip resistance is not just about the tile itself, but also where it is used. A tile that works well in a dry space may not be safe in a wet area.

There is also a balance between safety and finish. Tiles with higher slip resistance usually have more texture, while smoother tiles offer a more refined look but less grip.

At Art Tile, we can help you choose the right tile for each space, making sure it not only looks good but also performs the way it should.
